David Carr, reporting from SXSW, discusses a couple of efforts to establish an industry standard for citing and crediting sources (be they direct or indirect). The difficulties of the task in question don't mean that the impulse isn't a conscientious one. I believe I came across this link via @dandrezner on Twitter.
